Several months ago, I got an inspiration to pull out all the bushes in the front of my house. I had been whining and complaining about them and trying to cajole and bribe various friends and acquaintances into getting them out for me. I had purchased hedge trimmers and failed miserably at making them look nicer. And for many months, I just felt like a victim of these ugly bushes that were the first thing I saw when I drove up to my house. I didn’t think there was anything I could do. Everyone had told me, “bushes are hard to get out.” “You’ll need to tie a truck to them and then that might not even work.” I had developed a BELIEF that it would be costly to remove these bushes, so I felt trapped and powerless to do anything about them.
Then, one day, after attending a few seminars where I was learning about personal power and how my thoughts could affect my reality, I had a burst of inspiration. I wanted the bushes gone and I was going to find a way, it didn’t matter to me any more what it cost or what I would need to do. I turned to the tool of our times – the internet – and Googled “removing bushes”. I got a ton of You Tube videos of people tying chains to bushes and pulling them out with their pickup trucks. As I watched the videos, the voices in the background were telling - lots of “oh there it goes” and “ooph” in the background. I could tell that people with this issue were just as overwhelmed as I was and felt like the extreme measures they were taking to correct the problem were necessary. But, I didn’t have a pickup truck or a heavy chain and even if I did, I’m not sure I could maneuver one into the space where the bushes were. I kept looking.
I eventually found a discussion and tutorial on About.com for removing bushes. Instead of heavy chains and 4X4’s, the tutorial explained how I could dig around the base of the bushes, breaking down the various roots that were holding it in place and that eventually, I’d come to the “tap root” and I would be able to break it and the bush would be freed. Wow! For the first time, removing the bushes looked possible! Not necessarily easy, but more possible than driving a large truck onto my lawn and pulling it out and less expensive than hiring someone. So, I resolved to go out to those bushes with my shovel and just try the digging method for 30 minutes. I was optimistic that if I could just get one of the 5 bushes removed that day, I would be satisfied and I could take as long as I needed to remove the rest. And, if I wasn’t able to accomplish the task, I would hire someone or start hanging out with a tougher crowd and get someone to lend me their truck!
Ok, now I’d love to say that I just went out there and dug up those bushes all by myself. I didn’t. I had to get help from my family. I had to follow the directions I was given and I had to adopt some new beliefs about bushes and their permanence in the landscape. I had to have the right tools - a couple of big shovels and a pair of loppers - because I wasn’t going to get this done with gardening shears or plastic beach shovels. I also couldn’t just go out there and expect to start at the “tap root”. First, I had to cut back the branches on top and then I had to dig out some dirt and then I could start breaking up some of the smaller roots that were holding the bush in place. At times I had to pull and tug and twist and other times, I just had to rest and build up my momentum. And all along the way, I had to have a good attitude and I had to admit that I needed some help. I had to be willing to rest and I had to be willing to believe that I was making progress, even during the times when it didn’t look like anything had changed. Also, once I started, I had to be willing to accept the “mess” that was being made. Remember, I had given myself 30 minutes and I had to start by removing the tops of the bushes, so if I didn’t succeed, it was going to look even more horrifying until I could get more help. I was committed and I persevered, determined to not let my perfectionism or fear of failure stop me from making a positive change and taking a massive step toward solving my own problem.
I am happy to report that after 30 minutes, I did indeed have one bush removed! In fact, as it turned out, with the help of my family, I was able to remove ALL FIVE BUSHES in less than two hours! Amazing! I had been obsessing and feeling victimized by this situation for two years! And it only took TWO HOURS to solve the problem.
During the process, I had all kinds of insights in to how this job and landscaping in general has so many parallels to our personal growth and healing. Since then, I have been developing a framework from this experience and the result is an entire series of sessions, tools, events and support to help my clients do to their lives, what I did to the front of my house!
